Arriving in Nainital?
The last 2 km is the slow bit
On a busy day the final stretch into town can eat 30–45 minutes. A 2 PM Saturday arrival is the worst case. Time your run for before 10 AM or after 8 PM.
Rs 100 district toll at the border
A one-time fee collected at the Nainital district checkpoint. Keep cash. The card machines here aren't reliable.
Mall Road shuts to vehicles 6–9 PM
Daily. If you drive in at 5:45 PM you'll be stuck. After six it's pedestrian-only and the nicest time to be there.
Don't drive up, park at Tallital
Park at the Tallital lot or the bypass (Rs 200/day) and take a cab, e-rickshaw or bike in. Driving into the lake area on a peak weekend is a waste of your life.

Kainchi Dham full circuit (cab)
Nainital → Kainchi Dham → tea garden → Hanuman Mandir → drop via bypass parking
Half-to-full day. Go early. Confirm whether tolls and parking are included before setting off.
Bike or scooter (self-drive)
All of Nainital at your own pace
Check the brakes. The terrain is steep. Don't drive lakeside on weekend midday.
E-rickshaw (short hop)

Cheap but very crowded at peak times.

On peak weekends park here and walk in. Driving into the lake area is a waste of time.

Exit is generally easier than entry, but Sunday evening is the mass exodus.
Walking and shopping Mall Road
Park before 6 and walk. It's genuinely the nicest time on the road.
Boating on Naini Lake
Life jackets are provided. Earlier you go, the better.
Kainchi Dham visit
Go early. The facilities are well-organised and the road is smooth.
Viewpoints and photography
Haze builds through the day. Best light and clearest Himalayan views are early.
